THE Upper West Regional Office of Ghana Telecom (GT) has presented two of its new products, Smartfons, to the Nadowli and Jirapa District offices of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The donation, which comes at the heels of a request made by the EC to GT to extend its services to all parts of the region before the December general election, is expected to enhance the work of the commission.
The Upper West Regional Manager of GT, Mr James Nana Egyir, in an interview after the presentation, told the Daily Graphic that the package was in response to the plea by the EC to GT to ensure that the offices of the commission in Nadowli and Jirapa were connected with telephone lines.
Mr Egyir noted that work was already ongoing to extend GT lines to all the districts of the region, and expressed the hope that work would be completed before the December general election.
He assured the EC and all residents of the region to exercise restraint as GT worked to improve its services in the region.
The Deputy Upper West Regional Director of the EC, Mr Alexander Poku-Akubia, who had made the appeal, expressed appreciation to GT for the quick response and said the telephones would greatly enhance the work of the commission during the December elections.
The Daily Graphic, in its February 11, 2008 publication, carried a story in which the EC had urged GT to facilitate work on extending its services to all parts of the Upper West Region, especially to the commission’s offices in the various districts.
That was during a forum organised by GT for its customers in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital.
